The Counsellors at Peak Resilience believe we should be as authentic and vulnerable as possible - because we see our inspiring clients doing this every day. This led to our new blog post series called "Getting to Know Your Counsellor" - where we'll feature our counsellors answering questions in an authentic and vulnerable way so you can:

1.) get to know us better and 
2.) hopefully feel even more safe/comfortable when you come in for counselling :-)

Ok, let's get started with our Q&A with Raelene...


Q: What do you love about counselling? 
A: So much!

I feel like each time I get to be with a client is a gift. It is such an honour and privilege to connect genuinely and intimately with people. In her recent book, Brene Brown says "people are hard to hate up close;" I think it's hard to not love people up close. When my clients invite me to enter their personal worlds, where they can be authentic, messy, silly and vulnerable, I can't help but feel the same.

My clients continually teach me to connect more authentically to myself and others.  I really believe in the deepest part of my heart that this work of seeing each other and being seen up close is the thing that will make the world a better place. I also have a personal belief that the way we connect with ourselves and other people is not separate from the way we connect with and treat the earth, so when I say this is how the world becomes a better place, I really do mean it!

I feel that every person has a gift to share with the world. While I have often wished mine was to be an artist or musician or celebrity, I feel my personal gift I can share is one of holding space for others to connect to their authentic self. For me... 

I love the reciprocal nature of counselling. 

I love believing in the work I do (and the values of peak resilience). 

And finally, I love witnessing the courage and humility of my clients as they connect to their authentic selves.

I could go on... I feel like the luckiest person in the world to have this as both my profession and passion.

Q: What do you most admire about other counsellors on the team?
A: Although everyone on the Peak team is different, I really appreciate how everyone shows up as their unique, authentic selves and yet there is a deep sense of belonging and family.

While there is an INCREDIBLE amount of knowledge and skill on our team, I most admire the humility, kindness and genuine interest my colleagues have in their clients and each other. I admire how passionate and dedicated to different areas of social justice our team is and how they continue to advocate, learn and grow in both their professional work as well as their personal lives.

Q: What's a big goal for you right now? 
A: One big goal for me right now is training for a 4-day mountain bike race in Oaxaca, Mexico this fall.  Although I love setting goals (like the bike race), I am also working on an ongoing practice of gratitude for everything I already have. I am trying to cultivate acceptance and gratitude for myself in the present moment as opposed to the goals and to-do's I am looking forward to achieving. Sometimes easier said than done.

Q: What do you do for self care? What’s your fave way to relax?
A: There are a lot of smaller practices I do for self-care, daily exercise, delicious food, time in nature... However, lately I have unlocked an important piece for self-care for me is creating time and space without structure or a goal. Time to feel light and playful with no particular activity in mind. 

Q: When do you feel more authentic/most alive?
A: After a long day in the mountains with people I love (and my dog!)

Q: What's your all time favourite treat?
A: Mini dark chocolate peanut butter cups from Trader Joes

Q: From your perspective now, what would you want your younger self to know? 
A: That you can be strong and soft at the same time.
